01Where work gets stuck

Four places teams lose their time.

  • Repetitive work

The same steps, done by hand, every day or every week. Predictable work is the first thing software should take over.

  • Scattered information

The answer lives in three systems and somebody’s inbox. Connect the sources and there is one place to look.

  • Manual data transfers

Copying from one system into another, retyping, re-exporting. An integration moves the data and checks it on the way.

  • Too much coordination

A simple request takes five people and a week of follow-up. Build the workflow and the request moves on its own.

My own job, on a healthcare creative team. Workflow automation and integration.

I was the web developer on a healthcare creative team. When the team lost its email developer and its SEO specialist, I took on both jobs. Then I built the system that does all three, and now I spend about an hour a week reviewing its work.

03Approach

Understand the work first. Then build.

  1. 1

    Start with the process

Before any code, we learn how the work actually gets done and where human judgment matters.

  2. 2

Use the plainest tool that works

Conventional software and automation for predictable work. AI where its flexibility is useful.

  3. 3

    Check the results

What the system produces is verified independently, not taken on trust.

  4. 4

    Keep people in control

The person responsible for the work reviews it, approves it and can step in.

04About

Kellen Parker

I build software in Amarillo, Texas, and I started by automating my own job.

On a healthcare creative team I built a workflow that reads website requests, makes the changes, sends them to me for review and handles the proofs and follow-up once I approve. The hours that freed up went into taking on more.

Before that I built the backend for Mothership at Ardent Health. Parker Works Co. exists to bring that kind of added capacity to other teams.
